Director’s Notes

  • Kristine Reese, Broadway Actress and Theatre Teacher, emphasizes the importance of reacting in acting, and how being aware of everything around you, including atmosphere and the other actor, can inform your performance.

  • She notes that many actors prepare their lines in isolation, which may not reflect how human beings genuinely interact with one another.

  • Kristine suggests an exercise to help actors be more aware of others: observe and journal about interactions with people in various situations and contexts, paying attention to voice and body language.

  • She highlights the importance of small, non-verbal cues in communication, such as tilting one's head, which can make a big difference in a scene.

  • Reese recommends looking into the ‘Viewpoints’ technique to improve acting and listening skills, as it helps actors become more in tune with their surroundings and make their reactions subconscious.
