Director’s Notes

Choreographer Brian Curl emphasizes on creating moments for each student to shine and be center stage in a show, no matter their skill level or experience.

  • He emphasizes his strengths in teaching dance, particularly to those who might feel awkward or uncomfortable with their physicality, guiding them to be present and confident.

  • Brian believes dance doesn't have to be difficult to be interesting, it rather needs ‘the life behind the eyeballs’—the acting, the storytelling that's communicated through expressions.

  • He highlights that musical theater comprises of a few basic dance steps that are adaptable and repeated in different sequences. Knowing these steps helps students speak the 'language' of dance.

  • Brian encourages collaboration in choreography, often teaching the footwork and inviting students to contribute to the arm movements or other aspects, fostering a sense of collective creativity.

  • He promotes an approach that encourages input from the performers, expressing his belief that strict dictation of every move stifles creativity and enjoyment in the process.
