Make it Sparkle Video with Brian Curl
Professional Choreographer & Teaching Artist

Director’s Notes

In this segment, Brian discusses

  • Choreographing things to your students' dance skill levels, versus your skill level.

  • Keeping it simple, and making sure every student on that stage feels capable and confident in what they do. If you make choreography too complicated, nobody will look good.

  • Understanding there's a difference between a good dancer and a good choreographer. A good dancer can show you the dance step. A good choreographer can teach you the dance step.

  • When using student choreographers, make sure they understand it is a position of leadership, not a position of power.

  • If I'm trying to teach a student something and they are not getting it, it's not their fault. I have to change my way of teaching, or change the step.

  • Understanding if a dance move is adding to the storytelling of the show.
