Doing your research to understand the time period of your show.
Learning what attire and materials looked like during a time period, and adapting those in simple ways for the stage.
Using hidden meaning through color - you can tell an entire story through color, which the audience will pick up on subconsciously.
Starting with a color palette and adapting from there - for example if the world is the night sky, choose which costume colors will represent the sky, and which will represent the earth.
Showing time passage without significant costume changes - ie, through change of a cloak to a jacket to a vest.
